Catherine Michelle of Austria

Catherine Michelle of Austria (1567-1597), Spanish infanta and duchess of Savoy, was the second daughter of King Philip II of Spain and his third wife, Elisabeth of Valois. In 1585 she married the duke of Savoy, with whom she had ten children. She had a good relationship with her father, and exchanged letters with him after her marriage. Catherine Michelle died near the end of 1597 while she was in Italy; she had miscarried earlier on in that year. Her father died the following year.

Catherine Michelle died shortly after turning thirty years old, however all their descendants succeeded to built the Royal House of Savoy, first as dukes of Savoy, then as Kings of Sardinia and finally as Kings of Italy. Her descendants were the main line of the Savoy and also the junior line of Savoy-Carignano that at the extinction of the former became the most senior and the one that succeeded to the throne of Italy.
